Author Interview & Contest: Chloe Neill

Today I have an interview with author Chloe Neill. Her Young Adult novel Firespell, the first novel in the Dark Elite series will be released January 5, 2010. She also has an adult series: Chicagoland Vampires. You can also find a chance to win a copy of Firespell at the bottom of this post!

Do you have any “must haves” with you while you’re writing?

Honestly, the most important "must have" is that the puppies are settled and happy; otherwise, I won't get anything done. Otherwise, some music or background television and a big, ice-laden Diet Coke are pretty good.

Describe your writing in three words.

Hmm. (That word doesn't count!) How about "sarcastic contemporary paranormals?"

Do you have a specific time or place that you write?

I've just recently moved, so I'm working on getting into a routine, but I'd say in the evenings once the dogs are to bed and I've wrapped up all my obligations for the day. I usually write in my bedroom, as it has a very relaxing feel to it.

Is there a genre that you’d like to write? Is there a genre you’ll probably stay away from and why?

I love writing paranormal, and my current two series (and, if I have time, future two series) are all paranormals (adult or young adult). I'd love to write a Regency romance along the line of Julia Quinn's works, but I'm not sure my historical research is quite impeccable enough for that!

What's next for you?

I'm currently editing TWICE BITTEN, the third book in the Chicagoland Vampires series, and then it's on to writing the follow-up to FIRESPELL. I'm always writing or editing something.

If you could travel back in time for one year, what time and place would you choose? And if you could only take 3 things with you, what would they be?

I'd love to see the Mayfair section of London in the Regency period. I'd play Clare Fraser and take penicillin (for practicality), a tub of peanut butter (just in case), and some nighttime facial wash-wipes (also for practicality).

What's something surprising about yourself that most people wouldn't think true?

Well, despite Merit's vast love of all things meaty and bacony (she's the heroine of my Chicagoland Vampires series), I'm a long-time vegetarian.

Thanks so much for having me today, and good luck to the contest entrants!

As the new girl at the elite St. Sophia’s boarding school, Lily Parker thinks her classmates are the most monstrous things she’ll have to face...

When Lily’s guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, she was shocked. So was St. Sophia’s. Lily’s ultra-rich brat pack classmates think Lily should be the punchline to every joke, and on top of that, she’s hearing strange noises and seeing bizarre things in the shadows of the creepy building.

The only thing keeping her sane is her roommate, Scout, but even Scout’s a little weird—she keeps disappearing late at night and won’t tell Lily where she’s been. But when a prank leaves Lily trapped in the catacombs beneath the school, Lily finds Scout running from a real monster.

Scout’s a member of a splinter group of rebel teens with unique magical talents, who’ve sworn to protect the city against demons, vampires, and Reapers, magic users who’ve been corrupted by their power. And when Lily finds herself in the line of firespell, Scout tells her the truth about her secret life, even though Lily has no powers of her own—at least none that she’s discovered yet…
