Amy & Roger's Epic Detour

Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew—just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road—diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards—this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

As a road trip veteran yourself, what's the best meal on the road you've ever had?

I think it would have to be the barbeque I had on Beale Street, in Memphis. I don’t think I can remember the name of the restaurant, but I’ll never forget the barbeque. It was amazing. And really messy, as all good barbeque should be.

What are the top five songs that every road tripper should listen to?

This is such a hard one! I’m very serious about the music I bring on a road trip, so limiting this to five songs is challenging, especially since I like to make mixes that reflect where you’re driving… but here are five good-for-anywhere essentials:

1. Holiday/ Vampire Weekend
2. I’m Alive/ Jackson Browne
3. Human/ The Killers
4. Let’s Get Away From It All/ Frank Sinatra
5. Graceland/ The New Pornographers

And because I couldn’t choose just five…
America/ Simon & Garfunkel

Describe Amy & Rogers Epic Detour in three words.

Discovery. Love. Burgers.

What's been the greatest moment as a debut author?

I think it would have to be the first time I saw a review from a reader. It was before the book even came out, and so I wasn’t expecting it. This reviewer had liked the book, and reading their kind words online – suddenly, I realized that the book was out there in the world, in this really exciting way.

If you could travel back in time for one year, where would you go and what three things would you take with you?

I’d go back to 1924. I’ve always been fascinated with this decade, and particularly with Hollywood in the 20s. I’d bring a camera, lots of memory cards, and my iPod.
