The fourth book in this electrifying vampire series has all the romance, suspense, and page-turning drama that have made Claudia Gray’s Evernight books runaway successes.

Having become what they feared most, Bianca and Lucas face a terrifying new reality. They must return to Evernight Academy, Lucas as a vampire and Bianca as a wraith. But Lucas is haunted by demons, both personal and supernatural. Bianca must help him fight the evil inside him, combat the forces determined to drive them apart—and find the power to claim her destiny at last.

Readers have fallen in love with Bianca and Lucas, and they will be thrilled to read this exciting conclusion to their romantic adventure.

What gets you through a dark day?

Good friends. If friends are not available, books and movies provide a wonderful escape. If friends, books and movies are all horribly absent, chocolate pudding.

It seems like Bianca and Lucas can’t catch a break when it comes to their relationship—every book has a new set of obstacles. Is the romantic tension of “will they or won’t they get together” one of the most fun parts of writing these stories?

I think Bianca and Lucas are definitely together despite the many obstacles that come between them. I think for me it's less about "will they or won't they" and more about "how do they?" You believe in a couple more when you see them face adversity together and come through it.

Your stories are always peppered with bits of history and folklore. When did your fascination with the supernatural begin?

This is a lifelong interest for me. I usually attribute it to this book my grandparents owned: READERS' DIGEST MYSTERIES OF THE UNEXPLAINED, and I think there was an earlier version, too: STRANGE STORIES AND AMAZING FACTS. These were collections of stories about everything from the Jersey Devil to cryogenics, all presented as fact, though you have to wonder. The illustrations were everything from glossy 1970s photography to reproduced medieval etchings to pictures of Ancient Egyptian stuff. It was enough to warp a young brain for life. Highly recommended reading.

AFTERLIFE marks the conclusion of the Lucas and Bianca love story. Is it difficult for you to say goodbye to these characters?

Writing the final pages was more emotional than I'd thought it would be, but I honestly don't feel like I'm saying goodbye to Bianca and Lucas. They've been such a huge part of my life the past few years that I know I’m always going to have them with me. And I'm looking forward, in a few years, to being able to turn back to the series and experience the books more as a reader than as a writer. That seems like it would be fun.

Can you tell us a bit about what’s coming next from you?

My next book is FATEFUL, coming out from Harper in fall 2011 and is a stand-alone novel. It tells the story of Tess Davies, a young woman who works as a ladies' maid for the wealthy, troubled Lisle family in 1912 England. She's eager to leave service and start a life of her own, and when the family begins a sea voyage to America, Tess sees her chance. But while on board, she comes to know Alec Marlowe -- handsome, wealthy, and somewhat infamous for his mysterious ways. She learns his most dangerous secret: That he is a werewolf, being hunted by a larger pack that mean to enslave him. They fall in love despite themselves, never realizing that they don't even know their biggest problem: They're aboard the RMS Titanic.

After that, I've got a book about Balthazar, to be titled, shockingly enough, BALTHAZAR. He finally gets a story of his own, one that begins when he confronts the evil vampire who turned him centuries ago. And the poor guy has to return to high school, again, but in a whole new way... but more on that later. As for romance, let's just say that Balthazar's luck is overdue to change.
