THE HUNGER GAMES meets THE HANDMAID’S TALE in EVE (On Sale: October 4, 2011), the powerful first novel in an exciting new trilogy by Anna Carey. Sixteen years ago a deadly virus wiped-out most of the earth’s population. Wildlife has grown over once recognizable landmarks, and the New America is ruled by a controlling King who will stop at nothing to rebuild the nation.

Eighteen-year-old Eve has grown up isolated from boys, and has been taught to fear them. It isn’t until the night before the graduation from her all-girls school that she discovers what really happens to new graduates. To avoid the terrifying fate that awaits her, Eve flees the only home she’s ever known, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rebellious young man living in the wild. Eve knows she shouldn’t trust him, but Caleb slowly wins her confidence and heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between life and love.

Anna Carey was a face painter, nanny, horrific cocktail waitress, gift wrapper, sofa saleswoman, and children’s book editor before becoming an author—the one thing that allows her to be all of the above. She graduated from NYU and has an MFA in fiction from Brooklyn College. She developed THE EVE TRILOGY, a post-apocalyptic story of love and survival, with Alloy Entertainment. While she’s authored middle grade novels, EVE is her first series for young adults.

A huge thanks to Alloy Entertainment for inviting me to interview Anna and giveaway a SIGNED copy of EVE!! This was a different kind of interview for me! It was my first "phone" interview with an author! You know, without a moderator or other bloggers. I was a little nervous, but it ended up going great! I didn't have any way to record the conversation, so Anna was nice enough to send me a written form of her answers.

The interview:

Where did the title come from? What is the significance, if any?

The name is an allusion to the Bible, and the moment when Eve eats the forbidden fruit. She sins, but gains the knowledge of good and evil in the process. The main character had always had that name, from the very first pages. At a certain point I realized that it has a double meaning though—we meet her the night before her graduation, moments before a discovery that alters the course of her life. She is, literally, on the eve of something huge.

Is there really a television show?

A pilot is in development at ABC Family.

(Kristi note: HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE!?!?!)

What is up with that ending?

Yes, the ending—I’ve caught a lot of flack for that! In my mind, that is the only way the book could have ended. Anything else wouldn’t have been true to these two characters and the world they live in. That said, when I wrote those last pages I knew there would be a second book, and was already thinking about how the story would continue.

(Kristi note: I am hoping that means more Caleb.)

Can you tell us a little bit more about Eve as a character?

Eve has spent her whole life locked inside the School, taking everything the Teachers have told her as fact. She was taught that men are dangerous and manipulative, and any romantic relationship will be her undoing. Even though the first book follows Eve on the road, an adventure that spans several states and has her fighting to stay alive, so much of the book (and this series) is about her internal journey—trying to let go of her past.

Arden seems like Eve’s exact opposite. Was that a conscious choice?

It wasn’t a conscious choice, but at a certain point I realized I understood them both equally well. I think I have some of Arden and some of Eve in me, and I always love seeing that play out on the page—these two characters who are so different than one another.
